OK, so most people have heard of Sennheiser. A quality headphone brand if ever there was one. Well for less than the cost of a night out you can now purchase a pair of on the ear wireless headphones, perfect for use with late night TV watching. The Sennheiser RS110 Wireless Headphones. They use Radio Frequency (RF) and have an amazing 100 metre range (outside). For there size they are very light, and they use standard AAA batteries which last for about 10 hours.
On the one side there is an on-off switch, with volume and tune controls on the other. Sound quality as you’d expect from Sennheiser is outstanding, the only real down side is the lightweight plastic headband could be sturdier, so you’ll need to take good care of them, otherwise they may end up not as ‘adjustable’ as when you first bought them. But for less than £35 at Amazon, you can’t really go wrong!

Intempo BTH-01 – Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Headphones

Posted on | August 19, 2009 | No Comments

Intempo have produced a pair of budget blue tooth headphones, of the ‘on ear’ variety. They have many controls built in, with play & pause buttons, track search and volume. Battery life is pretty good at 8 hours, and they can be charged from any USB port. The range from blue tooth device to headphones is a decent 30ft, but this is less without clear line of sight. As they are at the budget end of the market, they aren’t the most comfortable pair of wireless headphones you can buy, and the build quality is average at best. The odd shaped headband is not adjustable, so may be fine for some heads, but if yours is small, or large like mine you may struggle to get a secure fit. The sound is ok, with MP3 files sounding fresh and clear, though there was a bit of hiss. Overall, for those on a budget these ‘phones will do the job, and at £35 they are less than many others on the market, but they don’t have the durability or comfort of the pricier alternatives.

Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800

In-ear phones, that are too small to include technology such as Bluetooth, get round it by by having the tech in a separate component that usually hangs on a neck cord. With these Sony in-ear headphones, a 50cm cable that also includes a power button. What this means is that in-ear units themselves are very small and light at only 57 grams – which compares favourably with your typical non-wireless in ear headphones. The range is around five metres or so, which is perfect for using out and about when you’re likely to have you MP3 player in your pocket or bag, but not quite so good if you want to use them in the home, i.e. walk into the kitchen to make a cuppa while your MP3 player is on the side in the lounge and you’re likely to start going out of range. The battery life of these phones is about four hours, so not bad for commuting and walks, but not so good for longer flights.
Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800 headphonesThe charger that is included is a mains charger which connects to the headphones using a USB socket, that looks quite unique. When will manufacturers start standardising on charger sockets for all gadgets!? However other than that little gripe, the build quality of these alloy bodied phones is second to none, and the sound is amazingly clear, with an impressive bass response, delivering an enjoyable listening experience with everything from electronic pop to hard rock.

Why Wireless TV Headphones?

Posted on | August 11, 2009 | No Comments

Wireless TV headphones have been around for many years, and have been growing slowly in popularity. Just like normal headphones, the advantage of owning and using a pair is that you do not disturb anyone else around you with your choice of TV show, or film, or game, or even music etc. The beauty of having them wireless, as with everything wireless is that you don’t have a trial of wires to get in the way, and to get tangled up in. This gives you the freedom to move about, to walk around your house or place of work, safe in the knowledge that you’re not going to cause an accident or rip a cable from your amplifier or TV, damaging the equipment, or even worse, accidentally pulling the TV of a shelf and on to the floor. This is a very real danger especially with young children in the house.

To the few of you who are what are termed ‘audiophiles’ the sound from wireless TV headphones may not be quite as a good as a traditional wired set, but to most of us you can notice no difference at all in the sound quality – especially if you invest in high quality ‘phones. You can find a pair of decent quality wireless TV headphones for about £60 – £70 UK. They are broadly available in one of two styles, again similar to wired headphones, either ‘in the ear’ or ‘on the ear’. Due to the wireless technology taking up a bit of space, the in the ear wireless headphones usually have a small unit that hangs around you neck, rather than built into the actual headphone. The larger heavier on the ear headphones usually have all the tech built in. The technology used these days for wireless TV headphones is almost always blue tooth, the latest version of which has a high data transmission rate and supports stereo, so gives a more than good enough sound quality. Is there any downside? i hear you ask… well the only real one is to do with power – as you they have no wires, all wireless headphones need to be self powered, so the battery life is one key figure to look for when looking to purchase a pair – this can range from a measly 3 hours, up to an impressive 15 hours or more.
